If you’re a sun-worshipper like me, you probably also dream of escaping the dark British winter! That stretch from November to March is a bit too long without a warm spot of Mediterranean sun. Luckily your winter holiday is just a few hours away.
It’s lovely to escape the cold when you take a winter sun break. I think of Portugal’s long sandy beaches, which will now lie empty! Or enjoying Spain’s fiery music in a little taverna with just the locals for company. Or tasting the delicious cuisine in a deserted café in Cyprus. Last winter I took a long break and toured around an entire region, staying for a night or two here and there before continuing on my merry way. And everywhere was so quiet!

You often find me at the Spanish Coasts in winter; it's sort of become my second home. I'd swear the tapas taste even better in winter! In southern Spain, average daily temperatures are around 17 °C, and on Spanish islands like Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Tenerife, they're even a few degrees higher. Ease the long wait for summer by enjoying Spanish island life this season.
I love visiting Portugal in the colder months. Portugal offers the perfect combination of quiet villages, a sunny coast, and lively cities for a fun day trip. From the Costa Verde to the Algarve, this is a splendid winter holiday destination. And my favourite Portuguese winter destination? It has to be Madeira with its eternal spring flowers.
Cyprus has that Mediterranean climate – mild winters with plenty of sunshine. It's an island with many faces. Inland with endless fruit plantations and picturesque villages to explore, gorgeous beaches for a lazy day, and a touch of culture and history. And Cypriot cuisine is like nothing I'd tasted before: a true culinary journey of exploration!
